Seriously you guys. This is a legit thing.
Ruffalo’s portrayal of Bruce was BEAUTIFUL. He was constantly fidgeting, shuffling, twitching, looking around as if he was about to be pounced or put in time-out just for EXISTING. And the thing is, he had every right to be jumpy. Hulk had created a lot of problems for him, and that cage they put Loki in WAS made for him.
But it’s not just nerves over Hulking out. No, he had a lid on things, he was at peace with it, for the most part. It’s also the way he is in general: humble; unassuming; down-to-earth; observing; the nerdy scientist.
I have to admit, I didn’t see either Hulk movie with Bana or with Norton, but I’ve heard they tanked (financially and critically). I have to wonder what a Hulk movie would look like with Banner played by Ruffalo… But the thing is, it wouldn’t be THIS Banner. THIS Banner only exists AFTER he’s had his fall out with his inner demons. With himself. This Banner only exists AFTER he “broke Harlem.” This is what Banner looks like AFTER he’s let Hulk, “the other guy” become a part of him, even if he’d get rid of him in a heartbeat were he given the chance.
This Banner couldn’t show up in his origin story, and while that saddens me on the one hand, it also just makes this characterization even more profound. It is the culmination of what his character has gone through and morphed into, and yet he STILL grows, STILL has a ways to go in accepting himself, being at peace.
It’s no wonder people (myself included) ship any possible relationship between RDJ’s Tony Stark and this Bruce Banner so freakishly hard.

It’s hilarious, and it’s also just so telling of Ruffalo’s playing of Bruce… the nervous hands as the military dudes rush past him, the way he hesitantly greets Steve… and then his humor at his own issue, the way he’s come to terms with himself, coping.
